What did you do with your tank(s) today?

So I think the glass is super glued together before silicone. Hopefully I can break the bottom out without damaging the sides. But that's for another day, gonna work on something else before I break anything I don't want to on this.

Took a lot, but it's finally out. Taped the glass over then gently beat it out with a 2x4 and rubber mallet. All the other glass is still good thankfully lol Now to create a frame to connect it to another tank.

Taking a break by the ponds and helped a wee one cross the dry grass desert to get to the "mountain top" pond :)

Met up with a Craigslist sale this afternoon and got my 20G and stand gone from the garage. She was in a rush and we didnt get to talk long but she had discus in a 90 and had Axolotl that had bred for her. Always fun to meet up with other hobbyist.

Bottom parts are fitted / need a little adjustment and the top is mocked up. Contemplating a few things before I hit more things with a hammer. A lot hitting things with a hammer to go lol

Caught a cold and have had zero motivation to work on fish tanks. Im so close to getting the puffer moved over and the Fluval drained and new 40B put in place but I just havent had the motivation. I am trying to make it a goal to finish by this weekend.

I want to try and see if my oranda that mostly sits at the bottom is 'fixable'... It acts as if it cant swim and pretty much scoots across the bottom on its belly. It eats and acts okay otherwise. Im wondering if its an internal infection or something along those lines. Thinking I might want to try a medicated food mix first. Maybe some Kanaplex mixed into some Repashy to try first. Possibly some salt added to the water to help with buoyancy.

Wife is dealing with something too. One of her co-managers that she was just at a meeting with tested positive for Covid. She's taking tests, all negative. But of course she and the kiddo are flying to MI on Wednesday. Perfect timing, hope the tests at least stay negative. For now at least. They're visiting family with many unvaccinated children and adults. Fun.

Anyway, not sure if great sign or bad sign lol The pond water return screen is growing moss on / in it. Going to let it go and see how it goes for now.

Woke up feeling a little bit better so I used my little bit of energy on tanks this morning. Got two 90g and 65B's gravel vac'd, glass scrubbed and 50% water changes done. Feels good to have that done. I hope to get a second wind in a bit and get my 46g bowfront done and move the puffer over today.

Ah, the difference a fresh razorblade makes. Soothing lol Forgot to grab blades on the last two trips to the hardware store. Their tank in particular was pretty bad as it gets a lot of light from the South facing window.

I needed to clean an Aquaclear 110 this morning because I noticed the sponge popping up the basket. It was absolutely filthy... of course on the 65B goldie tank. Noticed it started to have the sponge rot setting in and and really needs replacement. Decided to run it one more round and then need a new sponge. Of course I need to purchase some sponges since Ive used them all up. I think I might try some aftermarket ones next time. Had tried it once and the sponges were the wrong size and slightly too small which would allow a lot of by-pass. Need to find a good aftermarket. Anyone have recommendations on an aftermarket brand that worked for them?

Edit: I ordered from a company on Amazon called Zanyzap. Ive used their aftermarket sponges on the Fluval FX6 and they worked great. 3 Aquaclear 110 sponges for $14.21

Got all the gravel out of my Fluval Flex and its making progress towards getting out of the rack and the new 40B being put in. Have still been dealing with this cold so not a bunch of motivation to do anything, lol.

Started to treat my sick goldie that seems to have a swim bladder issue. Not looking good at this point, would be surprised if it can get better. Been a lot of learning with these fish and even when you think they are all doing well, the surprise deaths still happen. Ive lost a few to swim bladder related issues and a couple mystery deaths that has humbled me when it came to fishkeeping. I have been thinking twice before spend big money on any fish lately. Hopefully raising out my new gourami will be a confidence boost. In the meantime if the other goldie passes I think I will just combine the orandas with the rest of the ranchu into the 90 gallon and just keep one goldfish tank.

The move of the puffer has been great. It is super outgoing and interactive in its new spot on the upper shelf. It has been out and about when it sees me and of course is looking to be fed. Glad I made the tank change for it. Red wolf is doing very well in its 65B and its also a very interactive fish. Hits food hard when I feed and always is begging when I get near the tank.

Thats pretty much it for updates, lots of time in the yard keeping things looking good for the summer.

Stopped at Lakewood Petco an my way home from work yesterday and picked up a big pack of silversides for the puffer. I had been using the Hikari ones but hadn't got down to Pet Works to replenish so I opted for the San Francisco Bay brand this time. Seemed like the fish were a bit smaller but that is fine. Puffer enjoyed it and he really is way more outgoing in his new tank.

Consider it enrichment. I'd rather feed Alex 2-3 smaller roaches than one big one. Gives her a little work out and also prevents over feeding.

For me though, not much. Wife wasn't feeling well last week but left me a parting gift for her and the kiddos trip back to Michigan. I don't usually get sick / body doesn't recognize it. So when I understand I'm sick / have a virus it's hitting pretty hard. I didn't know a human could create this much mucus lol
I was feeling ok enough to drive down to levee pond to see if I could verify an invasive species. Definitely to report it to WDFW not to get my own so I can breed them and guerrilla stock the nature park... But I'm pretty sure that pond is basically dead and owned by the ducks now. Definitely dead water from duck waste. Lily pads are doing great though lol But alas, no mosquito fish.

Yeah the huge lack of motivation while Im sick makes it hard to work on the fish tanks or want to do much else but sit and watch tv. At least I took some time to try and work with the goldie with the swim bladder issue. I will see if there is any improvement tonight when I get home and it may come the time to make the hard decision to either continue meds or to euthanize. This fish cannot stay right side up in the current bare bottom tank, it could kind of do so with gravel in the tank. It is permanently on the bottom and cannot swim upwards towards the surface at all. It was eating but that was a weird thing to watch with it having so much difficulty staying upright.

I barely even feel like tv :( Bleh. At least the test came back negative and the wife door dashed me some DayQuil and NyQuil. Gonna have to catch up on the latest goldfish sickness at some point. I assume it's not eating and probably not passing anything either?

The goldfish was eating in its tank but it was very awkward since it hopped along the bottom and would kind of tilt to the side at times and lay on its side. Current in bare bottom hospital tank, it cant hold itself upright at all without gravel so on its side. It did poo but looks empty and a bit stringy. The swim bladder is shot for sure. It cant maintain normal upright buoyancy. Running an antibiotic and salt treatment at the moment

With my inability to clean my tanks ( per doctors orders) my son is having a hard time keeping up with maintenance since he also has his own interests. I’ve decided to downsize a bit.

Today I’ll be getting rid of my stacked 75g tanks and stand . The cool thing is it is going to a former student ( when I say former, she is now 31, haha).

When she first got into fish keeping, she reached out to me for advice since she has fond memories of a 8” female red dragon flowerhorn I had in my tank that would attack the glass when you walked up to it. Haha

It makes me happy that I am having an impact on the hobby, even if it is a small one.

Next year, I’ll be splitting my time teaching 8th grade US history (2 periods) and 3 periods of art. I get the large art room with a sink. My plans currently include having some rock dwellers in the fluval, I plan to get from dmd.

And I plan to raise up some baby butterfly koi for my uncles pond ( I am currently on the hunt for a 50 gallon acrylic tank 48”x15x by however tall). My uncle has a complete Japanese garden in his backyard with a huge koi pond and a water fall that flows down to an extra large goldfish pond with bridge over it. He still has a standard koi I bought him when I was in highschool. It is a monster fish and I bought it at 4” back in 97.

I forgot to mention that I am still keeping my 220g, my 180g show tank, and my living room 75g and my bedroom 75g.

I’m going to need advice from sir Keith at some point as my favorite rock dwellers are the compressiceps / calvus, but I’m worried the fluval dmd is selling will not make for an optimal environment for them . The time I had them before, I had them in a 75gallon.

The Fluval has a decent footprint of 32” x14” with said volume of 32.5 gallons. But when I tried the shell dwellers in a 30 gallon I felt like they needed more space and that was a 36” x 12” footprint. Granted my shell dwellers were nightmarishly aggressive. lol
