Kill the light? If you don't have any plants, nothing is there to take the nutrients away from the algae. One thing I learned is plants need specific nutrients, algae will grow off any nutrient it can find. If no plants are competing and you have any significant light, algae will grow. I can't...

Yeah, it just really surprised me that the problem was just not enough fertilizer. I kept thinking if the Algae was thriving it must be because there's too much food in there.

Here's an update, after much much reading and much asking around I came to a conclusion. Algae was growing like crazy, the plants, well some were growing, other's kind of didn't do anything but weren't melting off either. One thing I had noticed about the tank is it never has any nitrates, ever...

I second that, it would be refreshing to see aquarium setups that are not high tech/planted. :-)

New update, last Friday, they spawned again, overnight a pleco got the eggs though. Now, only 4 days later (Tuesday) they have just spawned again. I think it's time to set up a 20 gallon for them to do this in.

I wanted to update, sadly all the eggs were gone after 2 days. I'm thinking about setting up a bare 20 gallon and see what happens when I put them in it in a month or two.

I was surprised that they weren't bothered by me at all. Today all the eggs are still there, which is even more impressive for a tank with 5 angel fish, yoyo loaches, pleco's and such.

I caught my discus spawning tonight. The female previously had a mate that died, apparently she's found a new younger mate to spawn with. All this going on in my 75 gallon community planted tank. I was even able to get a video, they apparently don't care about me moving around their tank but...

I got a couple of good photos of the algae I've been fighting for a couple years. I managed to eliminate it from one of my aquariums by tossing all the plants and letting it dry out for a month, and starting new. Haven't had problems since. I don't really want to do that to all my other tanks...
