What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Been so busy with the yard and new concrete drive that I let the tanks go a bit when it came to glass cleaning and gravel vacs, just simple drain and fill water changes and feedings was all I've been doing for the past couple of weeks. Just couldnt take it anymore and did a bit better cleaning on all the tanks so that they are at least a bit presentable. Algae is healthy but when you cant see the fish it kind of defeats the purpose of having the tanks to begin with, lol.

One thing I hadnt considered with all the additional concrete, I have to run longer hoses out to drain onto the grass. This means it takes a bit longer to drain. Might need to come up with a more powerful pump and a bit larger diameter hose to drain faster. Another project for another day.

Just haven't had much success with the Congo tetras. Apparently they are very cannibalistic towards their own kind and the smaller fish seem to eventually get beat down and eaten. Down to 2 males and 1 female. I feel like I would have to add a huge group in order to get them to survive or just get these large ones out and start with a whole new group of smaller fish and then add the big ones back in later. At this point I might even consider a whole different tetra altogether. Im trying for more of an African theme, or fishes from the Congo and love the African red eye tetra but looking at $20 a fish gets expensive to do a school of them. Looking to head up to Bridges soon, might see what they have up there.

Went to Bridge’s on Saturday and while having tons of fish, nothing really there of interest. Had a baby whale but it looked way too thin, which tells me they dont have it eating yet. That would likely have gone well in my Congo themed tank. Only had a few lame goldfish to choose from so no additions to that tank either. Was still fun going up there.

Last weekend spent lots of time on all the tanks with all 8 Aquaclear filters cleaned and just a bit better cleanings on all the tanks in general. Got wrapped up with the summer projects so the tanks looked messy. Still have projects to finish before winter but should be able to keep them looking better for a bit.

I’ll admit that I’m guilty of not being online much lately as it’s summer and we have been traveling and loving life…. With that said, this site is the slowest I’ve seen it!

As for updates: I have 3 tanks set up in my classroom. My koi tank has new koi in it, and if you are in the south sound, you should really. CHeck out Hosi koi farm off of river road ( even if you aren’t buying). Truly some beautiful fish.

My koi tank has 3 standard koi and 2 butterfly koi ( all about 3-4” long (50g breeder tank) the koi from last year are living successfully in my uncles 5k+ backyard pond.

For my new 5g nano tank, I want to do orange shrimp, and if they don’t eat them, some of those micro celestial danios.

For the 32 fluval flex, I’m going to do some sort of African cichlid again as it has the argonite substrate in there. The only issue is that I want fish that aren’t scared of kids and also have none of the koi colors so kids don’t mistake them. My rusty mbuna cichlid’s from last year were donated back to my LFS as they lived happy and healthy and even bred successfully a couples of times over the year.

As for home: my 220 with my wolf hybrid needs an algae scrub but he’s as mean as ever and splashes and attacks anytime anyone gets near.

The 180 show has my two Oscar’s, my 18” ornate bichir, a sailfin pleco , and a handful of xL rafeal cats

The house 75 has my 8” peacock bass and my 9” clown knife fish, a handful of eels, and some hoplo cats

My bedroom 75 has a colony of buffalo head cichlids ( 2 breeding pairs ) plus about 11+ growouts.

My sons 180 has his yellow jardini arrowana ( about 7” now and getting more aggressive by the day) a true parrot cichlid, a bifa cichlid ( both about 4.5”), a juvenile ornate and delhizi bichir, and a pleco.

His bedroom 60g hex as his spectacular female flowerhorn ( about 5-6”)

I start back with trainings on Tuesday and between now and then, I need to source a light for my koi tank, source the shrimp ( ap?) and maybe find something for the African tank for the year…..
