What did you do with your tank(s) today?

If you end up breeding, I’d love to buy some culls for my peacock bass. He’s a true hunter, but still refusing pellets and I won’t don’t goldfish since they are kept in less than desirable conditions. Plus frozen krill can get a bit expensive , haha
I will let you know how that goes, still on the lookout for a female polar parrot. Likely that will be a Petco/Petsmart fish. I really think I spent too much on mine at $20 for the one when I can get then for half that at the big box stores if I remember correctly but I like the shape and pattern of the male I picked up so I felt it was worth it. I was getting a bit tired of buying silversides for the puffer so likely a good food item depending how long it takes to grow the fry out

Received six ~2" Botia dario from The Wet Spot last week to test whether their reputation as MTS-eaters was warranted, and was it ever! I put them into a 75g with a significant MTS infestation, and they got to work on the snails within minutes. Less than a week later, and I haven't seen a live MTS in that tank for days. Finally, a 'catfish' (not really: Botia are actually Cyprinids) that actually earns its keep! Today I received 8 more of them for another tank, and plan to keep them around, just in case. If you keep live plants, sooner or later snails will come along for the ride. I don't mind most of them, but the MTS are just too much.

Cleaned 2 Aquaclear filters in the fishroom. This involved getting my new style lid installed along with new style u-tubes and one new leveler. A few more random parts and the good features of the new filter will be on my old filters.

Cleaned an Aquaclear filters and did gravel vac’s and water changes in the garage fishroom. Nothing exciting, just normal stuff.

Started scrubbing down the 300 a little since the tank is getting a bit of algae growth on the rocks, plants and glass. Im putting in short cleaning sessions to get the tank looking good. The lack of UV on this tank has been seen with an increase in algae growth and a tinge of green water when tank is viewed from the side. I need to get my new Fluval UV installed but Im rebuilding filters as I go and I still need to work on the final filter before I install it.

A couple hours working on my 300. Cleaned a FX 6 filter and redid the plumbing on it to add new Fluval UV and pulling out all the plumbing for the old setup. The filter was rebuilt with new impeller, gaskets, hoses and aqua-stop valves. Many of those parts were running for years and it was just time to replace for peace of mind. Had noticed a little green water since I havent had a UV, so hopefully the new unit helps with that. Now to sit back and enjoy the tank for a bit.

Over the weekend I cleaned a large piece of Mopani I use in the 300. I found the best way to clean it is to use my light duty electric pressure washer and it cleans up nicely. This piece is one that my loaches found a cavity in at the bottom and will hide in it. I decided to rasp/dremel it out a bit larger and it seems to have done wonders because now the fish are in and out more instead of just in there, lol. Not that they were getting stuck but I believe it was the whole jar of pickles thing. If the last one in, wasnt getting out, then the rest were stuck in there. now the flow in and out seems steady with the largest two loaches avoiding going in there most of the times. When I first got the fish all 10 loaches had disappeared under that wood and I was freaking out trying to find where my fish went.

Had to put a goldfish down. Some sort of infection. I did a water change and decided to lower water temperature. The vendors tell you to run higher temps but Im feeling like this is the problem, it speeds up any sort of infection.

Excuse my ignorance here, but I thought goldfish liked cooler temps which is why you can keep koi and goldfish in unheated ponds all year long

Comets and koi are fine with cooler temps. Fancy goldfish are said to benefit from the higher temps in that they are more active and digest food better and have much less bloating issues. While my goldfish have not had many digestive issues there has been some swim bladder and infection issues that I believe because of the warmer temps have spread very fast. With some I noticed within 24 hrs they had been eating, look and act completely normal, then they are swirling at deaths door. I call them mystery deaths but the nature of these highly inbred fish and the higher temps is not a good combo.

Focus was on the goldfish tank this weekend with a hardcore gravel vac and 50% water change on Saturday and one of the Aquaclear filters getting cleaned today. Have lowered temp a couple degrees and just working on keeping them active without lowering temp to low.

Sunday morning water changes, all 7 tanks done. No gravel vacuuming just drain and fills, but fresh water in the tanks

Connected both sumps. The 220g and 60g are now one system. Both pumps are in one sump under the 220g. The 60g drains into its own sump that then drains into the main.

Sunday morning water changes. Got all 7 tanks done at 50 percent with multiple gravel vacs, glass cleaning and some decor cleaning. Tanks look clean and sparkly.

The large “panda” oranda (now black and brassy) was suffering from some swim bladder issue after the water change and was floating around weirdly for a bit but after a couple hours I came back and it seemed to be doing fine. Now that Im down to just the 4 fancy goldfish in the one tank, I dread seeing anything weird with these guys because they seem to be doing fine one minute and dead the next day. Will see if it was just a temporary thing…

Water changed the 300 this morning and did a hard core cleaning of the 90 gallon goldfish tank. I had to put down the oranda with the swim bladder problem so now down to 3 goldies. The cleaning is in preparation of using the 90 for other tropicals and then use the 65B for the 3 goldfish. Im moving the syno catfish to the 90 and maybe get a group of Congo tetras.

Had a busy Sunday morning with super cleaning of the filters and gravel on the former 90g fish tank. I moved the syno over to it and the 3 goldies into a 65B. I might stop into Petco on my way home and see if they have some Congo tetra to be able to put into the 90 so that there is at least some activity. I have noticed growth from the syno but it hides in the middle of a large plant most of the time so the tank looks empty. I know that once it gets some size on it, the syno will have no hiding spot and I will be able to see it more often. It has developed the trailers on its top fin and really is looking pretty cool now.
