What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Today is watching the snow storm start. Supposed to get about 8 inches. I did not miss the snow lol I liked it when everything shut down over an inch out there lol

I had to use a snowblower for the first time in at least 15 years.

Went for a little drive and went out to Buckley to Tropical Fish World and picked up 3 more roseline sharks for the 300. Put the new fish in QT. The store had 30% off all fish. Saw some nice tire track eels I was interested in but Ive had one before and didnt want another finicky eater so I passed on it.

How did their silvers look? I called about a different fish and asked about arrowanad…. She said she had a ton of silvers but nothing else

I saw a couple spread out in different tanks and they looked good. Not overly tiny or yolk sacks on them. They all were a bit bigger than that and seemed healthy.

The 300 got a bit hostile when the female sev decided she was ready to breed and picked out a spot to make a pit and defend. She wasnt overly enamored with this male but she didnt seem to care as much in this big tank. The male would wander off a lot and leave her alone and she was viciously chasing away clown loaches. I believe this was behavior that she did in the smaller 90 that led to one male hoplo getting a fin bit off and that possibly led to its death and another female hoplo a bit later on ending up dead.

I also witnessed some very unique behavior in the 300 from the male sev as it would block access to floating food with its body to the gourami. As soon as I pulled the female the tank dynamics changed and everything seems calmer. The male sev is behaving and letting the gourami eat off the surface and Im seeing a calmness settle in. Not sure if I replaced this sev with the dominant one if this would still be the case but considering it since the dominant one just looks so much better. Will wait to see how the current one does. In the end its all about how the tank runs compatibility wise.

I had a bit of a shock moment this morning when I went out to the living room and saw not one single clown loach in the tank! They had ALL got into the little spot under the large mopani and spent the night there. As a bit of time passed a bunch came out and ate but even then I think a couple stayed in there. When a big group of fish just disappears like that, it really is kind of freaky.

Kind of noticing a weird relationship with the sev and gourami. When the light is on and full daylight is going on, the fish seem to do well with no real issues. This morning however with the tank light off and just a lamp from the living room being on, the fish were 'different'. The gourami was leading and the sev was following like a shadow. While I saw no aggression, the gourami was acting as if it were being chased. This was not the case but you could tell the gourami wasnt liking this behavior. Just a weird quirky thing.

Garage tanks need to get addressed... 3 little roselines in a 65B in QT need to get moved. Im eager to open up the tank for something but I feel like I dont want to endanger the 300 gallon inhabitants by moving them too soon. Its only been about a week so far. I also have a female sev by heself in my 40B that I need to figure out if I want to rehome, or try to pair up with the male in the 90g. That male is the worst and hasnt really done well with the whole parenting thing and eats the eggs every time. The male also doesn't like being the lone big fish in the tank either, seems much more comfortable with a mate or another sev to bully.

So If I deal with those 2 things in the garage, I will need to get ideas for occupants for the 65B and 40B... Ugh, having to get more fish, lol

Well, finally found a "local" store selling fish... Meijer the mega grocery store sells glofish... lol Apparently there's a nice LFS in Lansing about 45 minutes away. Not that I can setup anything here anyway. Might be able to setup a 20 in the basement though. Maybe finally start keeping medakas. Can't wait for spring when I can check local streams and at least document what's in there. iNaturalist has basically nothing recorded where I live.

@BPSabelhaus, on some other fish forums Ive heard a lot of people, like yourself, have challenges when it comes to aquatic stores that are local. Many have to resort to online shopping to fulfill their needs. Years ago here in the Western Washington area there were many more local fish stores that had a huge selection of different species but even with the loss of those stores we still are fairly spoiled in that we can still find a pretty decent selection of stuff within an hour from most of us.

That's more than a bit optimistic. I haven't bought fishes in a fish store since I lived on the Seattle side (14 years ago), and Kevin owned A Place for Pets in Burien. So the nearest place for me is The Wet Spot, and that's a 3-hour drive one-way. Fortunately they ship. So basically all the fishes in my fish room came from stock that I obtained either from online vendors or from other hobbyists.

Online vendors still make up a portion of my fish but upon looking at my current stocking, I am seeing more fish from local stores like Pet Works, Tropical Fish World and Petco (Lakewood store only). My more unique fish are from Wet Spot, and Imperial Tropical online and all fancy goldfish from online vendors. Since Im keeping a lot more common stuff now, I feel that I could have got most of them within about an hour of my home, granted not at the same timeframe since some things like my puffer and red wolf seem seasonal and wild caught. Will see what my next two tanks end up stocking with to see if it holds true or if I will end up turning to another outlet to fill my 65B and 40B.

Yesterday feedings were a bit of the spoiling the fish kind with frozen foods being used. Puffer got his silverside, red wolf got his krill. goldfish and small community fish got frozen brine shrimp. Found the giant gouramis favorite food, whole frozen krill. Due to the cost of the frozen foods I only treat like once a week except for the puffer who wont eat pellets so a lot more often.

Moved my final 3 roseline sharks out of Quarantine this weekend into the 300 for a group of 9. The tank is super active and quite the community. At this point its just a grow out phase and see how the fish all work out together.

Now I am sitting on an empty 40B and 65B that I want to try and figure out some stock for.

Nothing, because I don't want to be in the middle of something if the power goes out, and my neighborhood is surrounded by outages at the moment. Yes, I do have a backup generator, but even so, that's not a good time for fish chores. I do have a lot of rearranging to do in my fishroom, including changing some substrates, once things settle down.

Yes, I'll take these 'atmospheric river' events over the winter weather I grew up with in Nw England any day!

Water change, filter cleaning and moved out of the kitchen into the spare bedroom. Added a small faux rock scape too.

Lost power in the middle of the night here in Lakewood. Didnt worry too much about the fish at that point but when the power was still out this morning I put battery air pumps on all the tanks to at least keep circulation going. Usually my area is not out too long but have had it out over 24 hours on a couple occasions. Would be nice to have a generator at times like this. Had looked into solar with battery back up but hated the fact the panels would be visible because they would be mounted on the front side of the house. We had done an extensive remodel to make the home look good from the street.

How is everyone else doing? Any others dealing with weather related issues?

Power here…. Didn’t even flicker, but a few miles away in Puyallup the power is out.

A couple of my daughter’s friends came over today to get out of their cold powerless houses. Obviously no school in Puyallup with a ton being w/ o power.
