They are small to me, but I do see them every day. Maybe I should try a panoramic shot of each bichir? lol, that would look cool

Yesterday was an interesting day... Saw my ansorgii get aggressive for the first time. It took a bite at the Nigerian lap. The only thing I could figure is it was an attack at him because he is also a male. Couple minutes later checked on the ansorgii and he was flexing the anal fin. So I decided to put the Nigerian up for sale. Ive wanted to reduce the number of polys and this is the start. Still thinking to sell the Koliba lap too.... I want to reduce the bio-load since I am likely adding a big Oscar to the 300g.

This is the anal fin. In the male it is larger than the female

Here it is flexing the anal fin. This is typical male mating behavior.

I have never seen actual mating from the bichirs yet but my understanding is that the male can cup his fin like that to catch the eggs from the female to fertilize them. I need to actually capture it on video. Kind of funky looking when he decides to expand the fin like that.

Spawning behavior by the two males at this point, with the fin flexing and cupping... none of the females seem willing. If it were to happen I would end up with a hybrid that Im not sure many would be interested in.

lol, well the males are “practicing” with the cupping of the anal fin and I did catch the Nigerian lap next to one of the females but the female didnt seem to respond. Maybe he was doing it wrong.
