Water conditioners

In efforts to save money having a large fish tank, Ive learned to buy things differently. As an example medicine such as Melefix and Pimafix can be found for pond at a much more concentrated rate and for a fraction of the cost.

When it comes to water conditioners I have switched from API stress coat to Seachem Prime. I get the 500ml bottle for about $11 and it treats 5000 gallons. Not bad bang for the buck.

Recently Ive seen info on another product from Seachem called Safe. It is an even more concentrated form of water conditioner but in a powered form. Here is info from the website:http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Safe.html

Safe is $7.95 at Kens for 250 grams. This size container will treat 26,455 gallons! :affraid:
Interesting stuff on their forums with questions being answered there, http://www.seachem.com/support/forums/showthread.php?t=1851

So I think this may be one of my next items I will switch out; from Prime to Safe. The savings would substantial.

So when it comes to water conditioners what do you use and why?

I think anyone who has multiple tanks or large tanks should use Prime. This Safe is something that seems very worthwhile as a large tank owner.

I either use Prime or Ultimate by Hikari, if using anything at all. Believe it or not, I rarely use a water conditioner, and have had no problems. Otherwise I would be spending a small fortune on it. :)

I will have to take a look at this Safe stuff. :)

When I do larger (50%) water changes I add Prime. If I take out a little 10-20g to just clean up food waste and surface poo, I will sometimes not use it.

I use Tetra AquaSafe Plus but will have to change since getting a big 210.
Expensive way to go with the big tank. 8.45 oz bottle treats 500 gallons. At least switch it to Prime and save some money or for the price the Safe.

I looked at Safe a long time ago, but it wasn't readily available in the US at that time, at least I couldn't find it at any online sites.

I used to use Prime, but I don't like that it adds something that "promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat." All I want to do is dechlorinate the water, so now I use Top Fin Tap Water Dechlorinator from Petsmart. It's a bit cheaper than Prime and like Prime, a little treats a lot of water.

I've also considered the powdered Cloram-X.

The Top Fin has a good ratio to it, 8 fl. oz. treats up to 2,400 gallons. Basically the same as Prime since a 500ml bottle of Prime is 16.9oz and treats 5000g. Nice find if you need something locally with good bang for the buck!

Interesting, “ClorAm-X” is completely safe and has even been granted FDA approval for use on Food Fish for human consumption.

So, If like Spyral we would like to eat our fish, this is the product we should use.

I've used the liquid Cloram-X and it worked well. I think the powder is far more economical. I've been meaning to try it, but it's one of those things that I haven't gotten around to doing.

I do like the Top Fin a lot and it's convenient to be able to run down to the store and pick it up when needed.

I like the idea of the Cloram-x being safe for food consumption. Not that I would eat my fish but it gives you the sense that its not a toxic poison your fish are taking in.

I buy my stuff on-line but if it came down to it the Top Fin is a well priced item with a lot of bang for the buck. I might pick some up next time its on sale and try it.

Seachem safe is where its at. So cheap and its just prime in powder form. Little harder to measure it for small tanks but big tanks its the way to go.
