Question - Discus QT medication.

I picked up a bottle of powdered Metro+ from hikari.
Could I use this as a general QT med?

Of course you can use. And if your discus will have internal flagellates strong enough to resist Metronidazole what will you use?

use praziquantyl....not soluble in fresh water (except prazipro api i think) so u have to premix it with a few drops of ethanol (i like to use vodka) and warm water. Piperazine is a better first choice but very hard to find...favorite for cutting with cocaine (along with levamisol) so not as common as 10 years ago for us fish nerds thanks to war on drugs. If u feed black worms they will eventually get tape worms...prazi fixes it...i saw a 12" tape worm come out of the butt of a 6" discus I had to have out of a shop in seattle's china town (not naming. like shop a lot and fish get sick. The trick is knowing how to fix them.) If you feed black worms you willl also get gill flukes and or gyradactyls eventually...fix this with double dose of formalin/malachite (quick cure....only 4 percent formaldahyde....I make my own with paracide 27 percent formaldahyde...) that is why i suggest double dose if you use off the shelf stuff...skip day between doses or you will have all your benificial bacteria crash too with ammonia..

met can be double dosed on discus no problem. It is not bad on bacteria and a great quarantine drug for a fish you kknow nothing else about. Good drug for quarantineing salt fish too. cheap....I buy it by the kilo....it only works for internal flagellates and pretty worthless for any macro worms...hence the previous post.

Re: Question - Discus QT medication.

Piperazine is available through "rocky mountain discus" and Al is a great guy. My quarantine procedure is a heavy (double dose) treatment of metro for 3 days with big water changes in between. Give the fish two days or so after that and pull the metro out. Then a three dose treatment of piperazine, every other day for5 days with small water changes before every dose. Always has worked well for me, great preventative measure for discus. Your other option is a combination of metro and prazi at the same time (available in a product called general cure by API). I find piperazine more effective than prazi so that's why I use it.
