Pea Puffer breeding in a nano tank?

I have this established tank running with boring fish. I would like to try my hand at Pea Puffers and hopefully get them to breed. The aquarium is 5 gallon but as you can tell a lot of gravel, a big rock and a big piece of wood. Would it be too crowded for a few Pea Puffers to be comfortable?

My experience with pea puffers is that even the ones that aren't downright aggressive are usually still nippy enough that they will stress out (and eventually kill) other fish, especially anything with showy fins.

For such a small fish, they also do a lot of browsing around the different areas of a tank, so you can't really give them a niche to guard so they'll leave each other alone.

While you never know until you try, I'd like my odds much better in a well planted 20gal with one male and four females.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't clarify. This would be a puffer only tank. I was thinking about one male and one to two females. And actually I could shift them to a 7.4 gallon tank instead. If I planted heavier with tall plants in the bigger tank would it be more doable?

I've heard of someone that had peas breed in a 10g, but never anything smaller. And only one or two fry survived.

My friend keeps a single in a 5.5, but I wouldn't feel comfortable going any smaller than that square foot of swimming space. They really are pretty active little fish.

Thanks for the input. I went back to do some further reading and found that puffers are actually quite happy alone. I will do like your friend and get just one and put it in the 7.4 gallon tank.
