Haven't really noticed a difference but I do have a lot of filtration on the tank to begin with. It's a lot of fun to watch his antics and I can handle him (under duress) but I've heard that they can be pretty nasty.
FYI to anyone thinking about getting one, I would definitely recommend it with two disclaimers:
1) No dumb fish! He has done fine with my rainbows, corry cats, plecos, loaches, ropefish, cichlids, etc (size doesn't really seam to matter) but anything not smart (gold fish, angels, guppies and some tetras) become part of the circle of life.
2) Have room for him to grow into!!! I've had mine for about 6 months and he's grown from the size of a quarter to almost as big as a CD! Apparently males can get up to 12" across and female up to 24" so don't think you'll be able to keep it in a 35gal community tank.
