Liquidation, bad pun! Seeking advice

So Things at work have been looking bleek and I am thinking to downsize the hobby.  

My 56g is in the works to sell... so one down

I recently purchased a acrylic 72g bow and am thinking of keeping this so as to remain in the hobby. So this brings me up to my beloved 210g. I am thinking about selling it. What is a fair price for the tank, stand, glass tops, beamworks LED's, 2x FX5's w/media, 2x Hydor ETH in line heaters custom plumbed, 36w turboTwist UV, sand, decor, etc....

Also where to get rid of large fish? Pearsei, Red Hook Silver Dollars, etc... see signature.

Any suggestions besides Craigslist?

ive seen your setup and it is AMAZING, given the quality of care you give your possesions it seems feaseable to ask at LEAST somewhere in the 500$+ region. really sucks that your thinking of leaving the hobby, but on a bright side id be more then happy to GIVE you african cichlids for that 72 bow! thats right GIVE you 2 maybe 3 species worth GL w/ your sale, you may be able to get more $$$ breaking it up. tank alone is 210$ period, that stand id say at least raises it another 100$, each fx5 should net 100$, the heaters maybe add another 50-60$. decor another 100$ or so, lights probably in the neighborhood of 100$ (im not 100% on what specifically you got)

I am really sad to hear that you are thinking about downsizing!  After seeing your 210, I knew that I needed some bigger tanks (from my 55 & 75 to the couple I have over 100g, and my numerous others)

If I had that setup I would ask upwards of $800.  As most craigslist 150g+ seem to go for the 500 mark, and yours is bigger and in immaculate condition, and comes with amazing accessories!

 as for fish,  either sold on here or.......  trade them in somewhere for some store credit.

This really sucks D. As for your setup, like Anthraxx said, at least $210 for the tank, $100 for the stand $250 for both Fx5's and the lights another $50-100. Unfortunately with glass tanks the older they are the quicker their value drops. As for decor and Heaters, thats usually a throw in. Id say a good $550-650 and it sells quick, $800 and you may find someone cause it is a nice looking set up, and well maintained and taken care of.

Thanks guys. Right now there is no immediate need to sell, so I have time to think this through. I dont want to give up on the hobby but I need to be realistic and money may be needed down the road so this may be one of the choices I may have to make. (I would be able to get unemployment at least)

The idea is that if the big tank goes I put the 72 where the 210 was. So what do I keep in a 72g now? I like the del bichir I just got but its not a focal fish by any means. I wonder if my midas would do OK. That would be right back where I stared when I got back in the hobby, back then a 65g breeder and my midas. Now a 72g with a solo wet pet... who knows? Will see how things go before I give it up.

Don't sell bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you will need the large tank and mass filtration for your new bichir collection!!!!! these things $@#! like sharks!!! If you get a few bucks for your great setup it's just a temporary fix!! Once the money is gone You will just be trying to buy another one for your new monster bichirs !!! If any thing get rid of small tanks grow the bichirs out in a 20 long with a hob until you can put them in with the big boys. I know I don't know you! but I underestimated the growth of my bichirs ,I had an endli that at a foot long was as thick as a baseball bat. I had to sell a lot of them of because they all grew so big so fast. Dont tase me bro!! The bichir guy emailed he has most of the collection left plus he's selling his tanks!! sent a text waiting to hear back! He has a pre formed fish pond built in a redwood box in his bedroom with an 18" weeksi in it and a 14" endli. lol

Thanks for thinking about that. Right now my job is a jack of all trades (master of none). I started as a customer service manager where I work and then it progressed to sales and now mechanic. Before I worked where Im at now I was at a home improvement store called Home Base. I was the tools & hardware manager. I could probably go back to that field but really dont want to work at Home Depot or Lowes though I have a ton of connections there. I have plenty of time to figure it out.

Its a last resort for sure. As for the bichirs, I picked ones that stay at 14" or less, to be able to live in the bowfront. Im still a cichlid guy at heart. These little guys have not completely won me over to the dark side just yet.

You should also look into the school districts. Like the maintenance department. You would be qualified for that. And you could look into Franklin pierce, Tacoma, and bethel . I also might have an in Franklin pierce...... The maintenance department is not custodial.

Yea cichlids rock!!! A bichir is a great compliment to a cichlid tank.I'm rockin 2 red bay snooks and a mini dovi(grammolds)with mine. something on the top and bottom of the tank. Good luck man. I hope things work out for you

I was in quite a mood when I posted. My wife and I talked about our situation and financially there is no reason I would have to get rid of anything for at least six to eight months after losing work. So really if it came down to it maybe not until March of next year. I am stocked up on stuff, and could go for that amount of time with food, water conditioner, filter media, etc. We have money in savings, I will be eligible for unemployment and my wife has a bit of side money coming in. So I was kind of jumping the gun on the 'liquidation', though it may still come just not having to be that soon. I will still need to look for work but at least I should be able to stay in the hobby for a little while longer.

The next day always brings clarity.

The official announcement was made to our customer base and the business has been in closing proceedings for the past week. Looks like I have work until the end of Sept and was promised an additional month of severance pay if I stayed until the end. I will also be eligible for unemployment. It is a sad thing for me because there is a lot of history with the business. My friends dad started it 40+ years ago and I have been friends of the family for over 25+ years. My friend (also my boss) took pictures at my wedding and his wife was my wife's maid of honor. So a long history between our families.

I have been preparing for this for some months now but still was a shock when it was official. I have enough fish supplies to easily last 8 months or more but it is scary to see my fish food supply so low. :joker: 

So good news is that I will have some time off to get some things done around the house and to spend more time on the box!

Career transitions are never easy. I hope you can enjoy taking a little time off; I know I'd have a hard time of it. I wish you and the other folks from your company the best of luck finding new and interesting employment. Hopefully it'll all work out well for both your family and your fish.

Thank you. I will get tired of being home, but I have a specific list of things I want to get done in home repairs and gave myself one month to do it. I freaked out a bit at first when I posted this back in August but now Ive had time to consider all the things and realize selling off fish would be one of the last things I would have to do. So I will still be in the hobby for many more months.
