i've heard that some goldfish can do well in ponds and grow to the size of volleyballs, is this true? and if so, what type of fancy goldfish? and where is a good place to buy them? i have pond over 8000 gallons and over 20 koi all over 12" and an albino catfish over 2 ft. i want one that will grow to be a fat, pudgy, ball!

Fancy's don't do well in the cold, with suggested 70-75* water temps for a healthy fancy GF.

Comets and I think shubunkins are cold tolerent-and your pond shouldn't completely freeze over at 8000 gallons. Common feeders are comet goldfish.

Sarassa, and comet goldfish are gonna be your best choice. While some of those fancy guys get around 8", they are SLOWWWW and will easily be made food by a heron.

And fancy goldfish take FOREVER to grow, I had an oranda that I would age at about 3 years old, he was only 6" long, comets however are gonna grow FAST. But the koi will not hesitate to eat them. Found that out when I released 6 4" into a pond with 10" koi

I agree. Fancys don't do well in colder temp like most goldies do. Comets, shubunkins and other single tails will be your best bet.

guys i grow big ranchu and lion heads ,black moors in my pond ,here in marysville ,i winter them all the time,i put them in @ 1.99 and pull them out and sell for 20.00bucks ,been doing it for years,my pond works magic on them.

My grandparents had a 9 foot deep by 20 foot long pond in the middle of their driveway. They had some gold fish in there that grew to epic sizes. It was pretty ridiculous.

I dont know what type but they had no type of heat and they survived for many years.

these 2 were wintered last year one ranchu and one lion head,

they were sold ,the pair mom and dad moors are still here in my shop ,i put them in for just 5 months then took them out ,their as big as those in the pictures,

one thing i hear often from people ,WILL IT GROW TO THE SIZE OF THE TANK?

those people are trying to keep a potentially big fish small,im just the opposite ,i wanna make them big

I'm sorry, when you say wintered do you mean you leave them outside or bring them in during the winter?
also im looking to make a nice barrel pond this summer and keep a couple of fancies. anyone know a good article on how to make one?

I had goldfish (comets) and kois in the same pond before and I thought that was a huge mistake. Once the comets are the appropriate size to breed, they breed like crazy. Every spring, my pond would turn a dark brown color because of their breeding. If you want to enjoy your kois, I wouldn't recommend putting them together. Otherwise, you can never get rid of the goldfish in you pond unless you drain it out.
