Going to try Cichlids

I picked up a 29 gallon tank a few weeks ago and it came with an Oscar. The Oscar is getting a new home tomorrow so I am thinking about a cichlid tank. I have never done one before. Currently have a 75g community tank. I am leaning towards some the smaller type of cichlids due to the size of tank. Seems the american type cichlids like Rams and Apistogrammas are the smaller species. Are there any African species that are on the smaller size?

I don't know the compatability of what cichlids can be placed with others. Can most smaller species be put in the same tank? I live down in the Tacoma area - not sure the availability at LFS.

Any information would be great....

I looked into doing a Dwarf Cichlid tank in my 30 gallon. It's a good size for them. And you can do a planted tank for them and it looks gorgeous! From what I've heard APFP in Burien has dwarf's and so does WetSpot, in Portland. Or you can order them online. I'm not from that area so someone from up there would have to give you more advice on where to find them at specifically.

There is a post on here but for the life of me can't remember who, or what it was called, that is of a gorgeous blue and black dwarf cichlid. I believe it was someone who has them breeding. Hopefully someone else can chime in here and remind me of what the post was. :(

The saulousi are great active fish to watch and the color is awesome. The males are really hard to catch too... had to remove all my hiding places to get them.

Thanks for the info.. Those are great looking fish!!!! My PH currently is 7.6. Is that OK or what should it be?

My opinions always seem to be different from the majority. :p But I wouldn't do either saulosi or demasoni in a 29 gallon tank. I feel it is too small for permanent housing for adult mbuna. I started both my saulosi and demasoni in a 38 gallon (3 ft. length) and had to move them both up to 4 ft. tanks when they reached maturity. It worked for a while, but I saw much less aggression after moving them up to larger tanks.

Betty - do you have any suggestions for a 29 gallon tank? Would like to be able to put a couple different species together and have them get along and look good. Any help is appreciated...

I have also thought about those... Is there anywhere locally that sells them along with the shells?
you might need to wait for the others to chime in on that question.
Lots of members here, have that setup and know where to get them at good prices.

I did see some escargot shells at petsmart in federal way last night.

You can find the shells in food markets to, I believe the stores do sell them in the shells, the females anyways
