DIY Wood

I collected mine from the beach in Burien (Didn't know it was illegal >_>). I boiled the smaller pieces for 3 hours, and steam baked the few pieces that were too big to fit in. After that I soaked them in a large container for a month then checked the pieces I had. Anything that squished when I pressed my thumb nail into it got tossed, and any thing that smelled remotely like cedar was tossed as well.

This may be a dumb question, but how do you know what kinds of wood will be "aquarium safe" and not have poisonous sap?

I'd assume that if I can cut in to the wood and it seeps any kind of sap that'd be bad for the tank right? But anything that doesn't would be ok to start curing and toss in the tank when done?

And do you guys cure with bleach?! I'm just paranoid it would seep into the wood and create ammonia spikes in my tank.

Obviously I'm pretty new to all this lol

Anyone have thoughts on Madrones? A wood working friend of mine says they are hardwood and I don't think they have poisonous sap like cedar.

Super good hardwood- probably won't ever rot. Only trouble I could think of is that the bark is a laxative... might want to remove it so chemicals aren't leaching into your water.
