diy over flow
ok let me start by saying that, i don't have pics i can post some later, and to understand this you must first have knowledge of how an overflow works; feel free to ask any questions.
list of needs:
1. 100% silicon
2. old hob (hang on back) filter
3. some 2'' vinyl tubing
4. and a sponge filter (that your not in love with you are going to cut this)
5.what ever size tubing fits into the spot where your motor went into the bottom of the hob/ or a bulk head that fits it
ok now take your old hob filter take every thing off it motor media and all throw it all away, now you are left with a shell, see the hole on the bottom of the shell find some vinyl tubing to fit it (or bulk head) doesn't need to be tight just fill the rest with silicon.
make sure that the tube (if you used tube) doesn't go to far above the hole just enough to seal it, and still enough to make it to your sump, once silicon-ed let it sit and dry for no less than 24 hours (DO NOT TOUCH IT you might compromise the seal) once its dry test it by putting something in the tube to stop it, and fill the hob to the top with water and wait...... watch for any leaks even the smallest will mean FAIL, if it leaks you must clean all the silicon off and start over (i had to twice don't feel bad).
now hang the hob in desired spot.
now take your 2" vinyl tubing and stuff it in the hob and the other in your tank you got to figure out how to hold it in there i use my light now to start your siphon fill your hob till it almost spills into the down tube to the sump, and take a air line hose and stiff it up the U tube till it gets just past the bend and (as nasty as it may be) start sucking till you get all the air out and plug the air hose immediately otherwise you will break the water lock.
now take your sponge filter cut a chunk off and lightly push it up into the U tube (not to much you have to be abil to take it off for cleaning, i do mine about once a week).....
