Shells can't grow as the crab grows. The break out of it and a new larger shell hardens. Molting.

absolutely amazing what some critters can do - must be awfully dangerous to do that in its natural environment being so delicious and all... just saying, id rather have crabs than be one

They do it in packs so that they don't all get picked off.

Watching a crayfish molt is cool too.
