Astatheros robertsoni

I've recently come across some "Astatheros robertsoni". Was told they are well tempered but after reading some stuff on the internet they don't seem to be too friendly. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had/heard of this fish. Its going to be apart of my big Geophagus/Satanoperca

Many years ago I kept this species. It was house with similar SA cichlids. I would say it's aggression level (as I remember) was fairly mild. I had one male about 7" with a Jack Dempsey, Severums, Paraneetroplus synspilus, Geophagus Brasiliensis and a few others in a 150 gallon tank. I think you will be fine as long as you give them ample room.

Just like with any Central American Cichlids, they can be aggressive. I have had 2 now going on 2+ years and they are great tank mates, but I also keep them with more aggressive and larger fish, so they may be just chillin because they know they will get a beat down.

The big question is space, how big will the tank be?

At a minimum 180g. im shooting for a 300 gallon. Him and his mate are currently with all the my geophagus and jurupari's and they are all around 1.5 to 2 inches. So far i havent had any aggression problems. They are currently all in a 75g but sometime in the next month i will be setting up the bigger tank. From the pictures ive seen when they color up they are amazing.

Yes a very beautiful fish with not your typical fish look, lol if makes since. How you are doing it is exactly how I would, and the combo of fish should look amazing. I would say a 180 is perfect, but who can argue with a 300. ;)

Please post up some pictures when your able. Here are my 2.

I would keep a very close eye on them. They may be mild for Centrals, but they are several steps up on the aggression scale compared to those super mild SA's you have.

Also keep in mind Astatheros are often called Central American Sifters. The similar feeding preference might cause issues down the line when the robertsoni mature.

My Robertsoni do not sift like Geos, as you see in the one pick, that Robertsoni is 8" and is in with 9 Geos and 2 of the rainbows. But true, it is a CA fish and they can be unpredictable.

Hey madness, great pics of your robertsoni!

I have always wanted to do a tank with robertsoni, Thorichthys and nourisatti. just not enough tanks or space right now. :(

I am more worried about the Satanoperca, which are even more mellow than the Geophagus and stress much easier.

Yeah ive noticed that juruparis are very skid-dish, and by design the 2 biggest fish in the tank are the juruparis, that way they grow up without getting harassed.
