Addictedtofish: The Water Cow that ate your Arrowanna
Addictedtofish Rated a pet shop and this is what he wrote. (I am posting what he wrote in this section and my opeinions on it because I dont want to Gum up the rate your fish store fourm)
[quote}Let me explain why, after 6 months from the last time I visisted this shop I thought I would take my brother by this store to check out his SA/CA selection. He has grown in the amount of tanks he had filled with a good variety of fish of good quality but thats about where it stops. Jeff still used his pushy selling style and shocked me with a new selling aspect. My brother ended up buying his last Water Cow, one of his Arrowana and a nice Butterfly Koi, a total of $100 spent with a possible sale of 2 Motoro Rays within the next two months when he got his 135 gal. tank up and cycled. We were talking to Jeff about the Water Cow and told him they would be in the same tank, nothing else was said about compatibilities of what fish you could keep with the Water Cow. 36 hrs. after my brother got home and acclimated the fish in a 55 gal. tank to thereselves, he came home the night before and the Arrowana was swimming around like normal then the next morning he woke up to see the Arrowana dead with its head bit off. He called and talked to Jeff today and told him what happen and all Jeff would do is send him a sorry card. I guess a $35 dollar fish is worth more than a potential $175 to $300 dollar future sale and keeping a good image amongst his customers.[/quote]
Hey addictedtofish I am sorry for your brother losing the arrowana. spending 35 dollars on a fish and it dying really sucks. With that said, I have talked to jeff about his water cow and every time i asked him what or how it ate he told me it would eat anything that could fit into its mouth (I asked him once in PM and once at his store). I am sure he said the same to you. The water cow (Eleotris Picta) is a ambush predator, He wont really chase after fish because he isn't very Territorial or aggressive but if a fish swims in front of its face the water cow will try to eat it.
I have made the mistake of putting an predator fish in with some expensive community fish before. It did not end well, The congo puffer ate that face off of my elephant knife and killed a few others. It sucked but I took the responsibility for it. Its the pet stores responsibility to tell you if the fish is a community fish or if its territorial or if its a predator. But its your responsibility to research the fish your self before you put it into a tank with other fish. If you don't want the water cow to eat your other fish i would suggest putting it in a bigger tank or putting it with fish that are a lot bigger than its mouth. Its lame but you learned the hard way.
The truth is that fish are unpredictable. Most of the Arrowana that i have owed have pretty much stayed at the top of the tank, who knew your brothers would hang out at the bottom.
O yea and I wish I would have gotten that water cow. I came the same day he sold his last one to your brother! lol
