What did you do with your tank(s) today?

If you look at the website the eels are currently but 1 get 1 50% off… super tempting but still 40 bucks for overnight shipping is a hard pill to swallow.
That really is still pretty reasonable for just a single order. I remember some of the group buys from Rapps where even split up amongst multiple people it was still like $20-$30 per person in divided shipping cost.

Helped my buddy ( my daughters softball friends dad) set up his first 90 gallon tank today. He said he is so excited…. He told me his step dad used to work at some petstore that did exotic animals and fish back in the late 90s he remembers bird eating tarantulas and archer fish. He was planning to order fish from some website I had never heard of, but I gave him different options and told he needs to narrow down his YouTube wishlist as some fish won’t work well together.

He will have a steep learning curve, but I’ll be there to make sure the tank doesn’t crash and his fish stay healthy!

Ugh, lingering cold symptoms have been driving me crazy. This has made it so Im really not motivated to do much with the fish tanks. Some lame drain and fill water changes and feeding a lot of treats to the tanks. Of course now I need to go to the store and replace all my frozen foods Ive been treating with, lol. Really need to do some gravel vacs and filter cleans but just waiting till I feel a bit better.

Exotic for you guys lol Starting to plan out a tub pond for the garage. Hopefully get some local elodea, wiishkiiga (sweetgrass) and minookam (wild rice) to grow in and around with the minnows. Probably going with wild type minnows, but cool to see rosy reds so might mix some in. Plenty of ponds, streams and rivers around me to check out when all the snow goes away.

Had a little gumption this morning and went at all the tanks in the house with some gravel vac type cleanings with big water changes. Felt good to catch up on these chores.

Today I bought some new substrate from Chewy. I hate the gravel mix that I have in my 40B and will replace it. I am going to put in CaribSea Super Naturals Jungle River. Looks to be slightly smaller and darker than the Peace River which is one of my favorites. Part of me is thinking to put the small black gravel from the 65B into the 40B and take the new stuff to put into the 65B. This fine sand would be better IF i decide to get a lower jaw bichir or some smaller catfish for that tank.

Started mixing in NLS Algaemax into the feed for the 300 and the giant gourami loved the stuff. A bit of a frustration with the "Large" pellet said to be 3mm being so small that the fish has difficulties getting the pellets without getting a bunch of sand in his mouth too. Wish NLS made this in a 4.5/5mm pellet, but next one up is the Jumbo/Mini-wafer (7mm?) size which my fish is just a bit too small to eat, but I bought some anyway for future use. I will end up using this "large" sized for the goldies so not a waste. A floating version of the Algaemax would also be nice, this really is a high quality veggie food.

What’s your old substrate look like?

I’m looking to buy some substrate for a 60 hex and having some that’s cycled with bacteria would be awesome for the tank.

If you choose to let it go, please let me know.

Your totally welcome to the substrate from the 40B. Its a smaller sized gravel in a natural tone.
Here is a pic of it

Lots of running around looking at fish stores today. Went to Petsmart and Aquarium Paradise in Lakewood and Petsmart and Pet works in Olympia. Was looking for something to put in my 65B and the only thing that slightly intrigued me was a Pink convict, lol. Bought some frozen fish food so not a total waste. I will need to do a run up to some of the northern stores next.

To be honest, my second favorite fish tank is my 75g with my 4 eels ( fire, tire track, 2x zig zag) and my black ghost knife. They are so fun to watch when I feed them at night!

It might be a new thing for you to try, though I think you said you tried one a few years ago…

I also have hoplo cats and a pair of BN along with a black angel fish my step dad gave me because it was bullying his tetras.

Did a quick water change on my bedroom tank then took a picture or two ( after turning the lights down to 50% power so they would come out quicker….IMG_4009.jpegIMG_4010.jpeg

Looking for something that can live permanently in the 65B and something else for the 40B. Thinking of a Congo themed tank for the 65B with a leopard bush fish as the centerpiece and maybe a butterfly fish and bichir. The 40B with maybe a pair of convicts to breed for puffer food.

I decided to swap out out the gravel (CaribSea Kon Tiki) in the 65B red wolf fish tank to the new CaribSea Jungle river sand. The gravel was not good for the fish in there because as a sight predator he was having problems spotting food on the substrate because it looked like same as his pellets. Hopefully the sand is better for him this way. Was a huge mess doing the swap out and everything was cloudy last night.

I used a little clarifier so it should be cleared up when I get home. I bought some bacteria in the bottle just in case I crashed the cycle from removing the substrate.

The bad thing is that this doesn't solve my 40B makeover, lol. I still dont know what I want to do with that tanks decor now.

Got my order of NLS Algaemax mini-wafers and when cut in half with a pill cutter are perfect for the giant gourami and he can continue to grow into the pellet size. Then when he gets really big, I should be able to use full sized wafers.
