what size tank can apistogramma? live in?

I am setting up my pond soon but not too soon and i want to get some apisto's now what would be the appropriate size tank for 3-5.And what are you experience's with them as far as aggression goes.

Well there is several types of apistos... the problem with keeping 3-5 is you need a pretty large tank after a pair forms... I kept a pair of apisto cocatoo in a 10 gallon... I tried keeping two females in there, but once the male paired with one they beat pretty bad on the other.

its gonna be in my planted pond so it will be big enough and how long until they would start pairing off ive had cons pair off REALLY young and some fish that took 4 months+50-60 dithers to not wanna kill each other

Also I'm not to woried about cost but since I'm new to dwarf cichlids would it be smarter to do rams as my first

Almost everything Ive read has suggested 20g to raise dwarfs as a minimum. Its not that they dont fit into smaller, its to keep up water quality.
