Suspicious Driftwood

Hello,

Got a really nice piece of driftwood, but the inside of the wood is very soft and feels like a sponge.

Anyone ever run across something like this, and was it safe when you added it to your aquarium?

Thanks,
Chris

Where did the driftwood originally come from?

I have an old piece of wood that I bought at Petco like 100 years ago that is now spongy all over. I recently took it out as it was disintegrating in the tank. I don't believe it to be bad for the fish, just messy.

If it's a piece you found in the woods or near a river and it has dry rot , that may be a different issue, but not sure as I haven't dealt with that specifically

I bought the piece from a driftwood seller on EBay. Supposedly they are pulled from the Ohio River.

They said specifically that the pieces are power washed, and cleaned. Even confirmed that they use the same pieces in their own aquariums, not sure I believe them but that's a different conversation.
