Red Hook sexing

I have 5 Red Hooks. Some have a point on the anal fin and some are rounded. Which is the male or female? They were not very cooperative during family pictures.

I am by far no expert, but I was told when I had them years back that the ones with longer hooks were male.

I was also told that females had a more rounded hook. I can’t actually remember now what that is supposed to mean, but I remember the advice from monster fish keepers.....

please take this with a grain of salt as I have never had any breed and they all looked about the same to me.

I believe that DMD had far larger ones than I had, so maybe he can shed some light on the question

@Colin James, the silver dollar variety you have is not what I had.
I had MYLOPLUS RUBRIPINNIS, or Red Hook Mytennis.

Mine were big and had large hooks like these

Mine looked like the picture above. I never could tell the sex of these things... but the belief is that the longer anal fin is supposed to be male. The other thought is the male will get dark or black on the edge of the tail.

Added 5 silver dollar size Metynnis Hypsauchen the 120g. Origin is the Wet Spot by way of @Ruturaj Hagavane. Still settling in but look good and nothing tone won’t heal. I have an adult in the 220g that I will move after lights out.

Little silver dollars are so cute... then they grow up, lol. I dont miss the getting hosed part of feeding them! Very aggressive feeders for sure. They like to eat.

Yes, they are. I enjoy feeding them.

Nice! You should set up a breeding tank. They are very prolific, and a huge school of tiny little silver dollars is one of the cutest things ever!

This one from the 5 WC M. Hypsauchen has a beautiful red hook. The others have rounded.
