It's either Geophagus Altifrons or some type of Surinamensis, those are the two most common types you see around here besides the former "Geo Jurupari/ daemon"
I'm leaning on Surinamensis.
True
Geophagus surinamensis are scatered in very small numbers across Europe. Nothing is being exported out of Suriname these days so the label
Geophagus surinamensis is commonly applied to the "surinamensis complex" that Kullander broke up a number of years back into various described species (
Geophagus altifrons,
Geophagus dicrozoster,
Geophagus abalios,
Geophagus branchybrachus etc..).
What you have is a
Geophagus abalios. The large midlateral spot is the deal breaker. It spans more than 4 scales eliminating
Geophagus altifrons (small to no midlateral spot) and it's many regional varients, there is no black smudge of color on the muzzle of the fish as well which eliminates
Geophagus dicrozoster. The broken line on the caudal fin as opposed to spotting (spotting being a
Geophagus altifrons sign) along with bisect lateral barring is a traight only found in
Geophagus abalios, the fish pictured above. They are immediate mouth brooders and reach about 10"-12" as adults.
The "geo jurupari and daemon" mentioned above are from a seperate genus of the eartheater family, under
Satanoperca, of which there are 7 described species, none without a spot on the caudal peduncle. That's how you rule that genus out as well.
Hope that helps clear it up for you. You have a lovely fish.
