shes showing bars but his nest still isnt big so i put her in a 5g next to himn hopefully he builds it bigger

Wait, she's in her own 5g that is next to his? That's probably the whole problem your having. I always put my female in a large vase/cup and set that in where the male is. he can see her better.

Some people have used breeder boxes too and had the female in the box in the males tank while he's building a nest
