Iron - adding and testing

I'm a few weeks into my first planted tank and I have a couple of dwarf lily bulbs that could benefit from Iron. I have the Iron to add but I'm nervous about adding too much. Do you test to make sure you're not adding too much? Which test is preferred?

I'd say most people don't test. And instead just add small amounts until they get the desired results.
