Looks like Joe is right. Here is a pic I found that looks close to it.

So it isn't a convict at all?? I bought this fish and another fish in the same tank labled as convicts. I wanted to try to breed some for food for my fish. But I did do some searching and I noticed it looked nothing like the pics that I was seeing.

Guppies would be alot easier than dealing with convicts.
what would you say the biggest downfall is when breeding cons? I heard the yield on guppies, isn't that great. While the yield on cons is huge.

What would you say pros, and cons?

Thanks man.

If you have a good parental pair they will raise more than you could ever want. I have several in the 75 with my Africans. They always manage to raise at least enough to carry on the next generation, and then some. Separated to a tank of their own, I woulds say hundreds. If you are interested, I will give you all you want. (but we would have to get them out of the 75.)

I often wanted to just get a breeding pair and crank out thousands of these bastages...and then release millions into lake Washington! lol

Unfortunately they would probably survive. They really are fun to watch. They are not afraid of anything. I've seen them fend off Africans 3 times their size. But they are like rabbits, they don't know when to stop.

That actually sounds a little scarey lol. That's alot of feeders to feed. I bet they grow pretty fast too. I'm going to research convicts a little more. Sounds like a little more then what I need at the moment. I have preds in my tanks but I don't know if they can eat hundreds before the next batch is do.

Oh guppies don't pair huh? It's just one big love fest. Ok I'll say what I have to feed that might help. For the record I never really planned on breeding any fish I'm strictly a customer lol. I have to feed 3 dovii 1 5-6 incher 1 2 incher 1 3-31/2 incher.

1 7-8 inch payara.

That's what I'll be feeding.

A pair of red jewel cichlids will breed just fine in a 10g and would suit your need well. They also raise their fry well too.

Just a little of what I know. The HRP are NOT called the blue convict. They are only referred to as blue convict if breed with the convict. They are like the midas and red devil. So much cross breeding has caused the specie to be hard to identify and rarely do you get a true devil or midas. Same goes for HRP'(honduran red points) and blue convicts. The true HRP is bright blue w/red fins. Some have dark spots on the body some more vertical lines, and the body is not as tall as the convict, and the forehead and nose is more sloped. The true HRP's are far less common than the blue convict. Once you get that blue into the convict genes and then get the convicts breeding like rabbits. Then you end up with hundreds of not blue convicts but a faded bluish grayish convict.

HRP's do not spawn as freely as the convict. I have 4 pairs of HRP's and have not been successful yet. As for my convicts, they are breeding in the toilet. :laughhard: No really, they just will not stop, no matter what I do. wait I take that back. I haven't seen one pair of mine spawn lately, I think it's because they are sharing their tank now with a mating pair of 9" red devils. But they are trying. God forbid, they are trying.

As for your dilemma. I would not use HRP's. I would use convicts. I have several proven mated pairs I could sell you. Or go with guppies. I bought 8 one day to just live in a 55gal until I had something to put in it. I say it was not 3 weeks and I had about 8 more. But convicts wow they have a lot of off spring. One of my pairs had at least 500 babies.

Here are a couple pics of mine:
