GSAS Great Pond Race

A bit early folks on the post but as people are already speaking about this and making plans the pond committee just wanted to let everyone know how the Great Pond Race works.  We will probably do another reminder post some time in May but its enjoyable to see so many people already getting excited about this fun event.  So, just to remind everyone...here's how things work.

  • The pond must be outside of your house.(exposed to the elements)

  • A pond is any vessel that can hold water. We've had people use 5 gallon buckets, 20 gallon wash tubs, or a stock tank. Put that old bathtub to use outdoors!
  • You may start with up to 12 fish. In the past these were white clouds. However this year you can use any fish. So get those 12 Oscars into that pond
  • The Race begins June 1st 2014. (note you should put your fish in your pond when temps are appropriate. For something like White Clouds, goldfish, koi etc That could be June 1st most likely. However if you wanted to spawn something less tolerant to cold like say Angelfish you should probably wait till we have higher night time temperatures.
  • The Race Ends October 1st 2014. You may wish to bring your fish back inside before this date. Watch the weather and your fish.
    • Fish counting. Yes you really have to count your fish and report your counts to the GPR chairman via email.  Your final count of fish is due on the last day of the race (October 1st) or before if you decide to wrap things up ahead of time.  This is on an honor system and won't be checked on unless it's unbelievable. Which I believe a lot of fish can and will be spawned outside
  • The Great Fish Race Chairman reserves the right to change the rules and make decisions as he/she sees fit in the best interest of the club.
  • Taking a Mulligan, Neighbor's cat ate your Celestial Pearl Danios, and now you've made an anti Cat Fishing Device(ACFD)? Great email the GPR chairman and grab some new ones and toss em in. The email is only a requirement so we can help you troubleshoot the problems.

The Race is open to GSAS members only (so if you aren't a member yet and you want to do the pond race...join us and have some fun!)

Yes...and its just fun to see who is raising what and what their ponds look like and what surprises they had, etc. etc.

We had a great turnout last year.

Does one provide a picture of their pond along with a total count of their broods or spawns?
Do you need to have a second witness count as well? some breeds don't have large broods or spawns, is this a numbers game on fry count? How many ponds per entry, per household?

Last year we requested pictures for the newsletter. You can see those pictures if you view GSAS/NORTHWEST AQUARIA - VOL. 36 NO. 3 NOV 2013, PAGE 6

The "fish count" rules are above, it is an "honor" system.

It's your choice what species you put into the pond but the largest count (at the end of the race) wins. So you put 12 fish in in June and take 92 fish out in October. You would submit a count of 80 fish (92 less the 12 you started with).

You can have more than one pond but the rules are the same for each pond.
