How long did it take before they deteriorate? does it make a mess (seems like it on the 2nd photo)

I was doing research on them before and seems like Shrimps and Plecos love to munch on those.

Yup, shrimp love climbing on them they do grow good algae, they make good anchors for plants and mosses too.
