No idea on what to stock with

Not too small for Africans at all. Just need the right types. Several africans can go in your tank! Several, Several, Several different types! there is only a couple that cant really... lol..... Now Did you mean, american cichlids, the ones that get huge?? cause africans usually stay 3-5" in size.
What kind of africans were you thinking? if you want allot of color I would go mallawii, like a tank of mbuna, (bright yellows, oranges, and blues) or Peacocks (Split color fish like blue face yellow body, or red body) So.... really depends on what your looking for... but usually a 30 gallon is enough to keep a bunch of africans happy.
