Magfloat

I have a glass tank and a magfloat made for glass tanks. I really have scratched up my tank probably from sand getting stuck between the magfloat. I'm wondering if I was to replace the felt with felt that comes on the acrylic version would I have less of a chance of getting sand stuck? I stay three inches away from the bottom of the tank but still get scratches.

My thinking is yes you'd have less of a chance of getting scratches, until you got sand on it again. My black sand is slightly magnetic making it all the more difficult. With such a large tank it would probably be hard to do this but I take a big piece of filter foam and clean the sides myself. I couldn't get enough pressure on the glass cleaners that have long arms so I've found my own hand to be perfect for me.

I dont use mag floats for that exact reason. If your doing water changes regularly like you should be, just get in the tank at every water change and wipe the glass clean. No need to use those and risk scratching the tank.

I do have pool sand. My problem is white wavy things on my glass just above the sand. I think it's from left over food. The oscars are very messy eaters and alot of food falls to the bottom. I have a pleco so it doesn't stay there long. Any floating pellets I remove with a net. I'm doing water changes every 3 days. I change about 50 percent of the tank water. It sucks it only took a couple weeks to scratch a 900 dollar tank. I spent 40 on the magfloat so I do want to use it.

What happened to your signature line? I know you got rid of the midas but now you have no fish listed. You better not be weaseling out of the hobby....

I did erase it out of frustration last weekend since I had soo many problems. I felt like leaving the hobby and going back to flying my helis. I'm happy to say I'm still in the fish hobby. It just feels like I spend more time cleaning the tank then I do enjoying it. I got in the hobby because it was supposed to be a stress reliever but seems to only add more stress in my daily life. Maybe I need to see a therapist lol. I can always get my 210 with canisters in the future. This is a setup I wish I would have done. It's only money right?

Ive seen the videos and pics of your tank and it is gorgeous and spotless. I too keep a very clean tank so I understand about the work that goes into it. When it is not fun anymore you need to think about what it is that makes it a chore and work on fixing that. If its water changes, find a better way to do it. Maybe you need to make a homemade thing to make it easier. I still have not completed my FX5 water changer yet but I know it would save me some time. Seems like a lot of what you got issues with you could solve with canisters....

Sorry to say this, and its not because I dont like Oscars.

Get rid of the Oscars, and buy yourself something different. All small, say 2" and smaller. You could put in there a dozen to 20 small Cichlids. Throw in a couple exotic plecos, a couple cool looking loaches and maybe a Poly. ALL SMALL.

And enjoy watching them grow and interact. You can provide caves and hiding places, soon it becomes real enjoyable, because now your interacting with them. They start small, and get use to your ways. Yes they all will soon get larger. But you will have months of enjoyment. Then as the tank starts to get crowded, you can choose your favs and keep them and sell the rest.

I have a 135 as a grow out. I have 20 fish in there and it has been about 6 months since they all went in. The average size of fish is now 4" (they all went in at around 1"). I am overcrowded, and working to relieve that. But in a 210, you may have another few months to enjoy it all. Say 8 months. Who knows, after 8 months of enjoying them, it may cause you to want to set up another tank. :)

Well good luck in whatever you decide.

Do what it takes to keep it fun, even if it means keeping Oscars! :nanana:

Thats what Ive decide to do. I got my little Tiger O who will be the main feature fish in my SA, Amazon theme tank.

OK then. If Oscars are your thing, and they are what keeps you warm and fuzzy.

Then have one or 2 of your new group of growouts be, Oscars.

If you want to keep the Oscars you have, then I guess it will be hit and miss when adding anything. I have a beautiful Pike available. My argentea and black belts are pretty mellow. In fact all of my fish are use to the community setting. So I could offer you a great deal. :)

You got a nice one. Hopefully he keeps his pattern and color. I heard they don't get their color until they are adults. I like the oscar's so much because they are like puppies.

I can't get rid of my oscar's. They are part of the family now. I've been wanting to get rid of the pleco and get some cool ones that don't grow as big but I can't seem to do it. I feel like it would be wrong. The waste that my pleco creates is just unreal. I had a hard time getting rid of the midas.

I agree that when your attached to a fish it is hard to let go. My Midas was a runt at 11" and I wanted BIG fish but he was family so he stayed. I do think your pleco should go.... Thats a lot of bioload!

Are you wanting only a cichlid tank? A schooling fish like silver dollars would add a lot of movement.

I would say I'm wanting only a cichlid tank with a couple nicer plecos. The type of fish I like are oscars, midas, red devil, green terror, JD, red terror, ect. I'm not really a fan of the silver dollars. Do you still plan on getting yours back in the 210?

Will the nicer pleco's still eat the left over food that the oscar's spit out? My current pleco cleans all that up and it's great. I wouldn't be able to get to it without doing a water change.

I would have been very happy with the fish I had if the midas worked out. I won't give up though.
