Fry Boxes?

Anyone have instructions for making/recommendations for a nice in-tank fry rearing box? Ideally, I would like something that I can hang on the inside of the tank with a solid bottom, but is able to take advantage of the filtered and heated water from a much larger tank. Specifically, I want to have a 20 long with a breeding group of Betta burdigala and occasionally siphon out the young fry with a turkey baster and keep them in the holding box so I can make sure they get enough to eat and protection from their older siblings.

I'm thinking that I will take one of those large Marina hang-on holding/breeding boxes and put sponge filters over the intake and the out take grate to slow the flow (wild betta fry don't like to be jostled at all). Has anyone used or modified this? Or have a blueprint that I could build my own? Thanks!

I think that's gonna be a DIY. Tupperware and turn it in to like a sponge filter siphon etc.

I have one of these... I don't use any of the dividers and have used it for new fry.  The bottom isn't solid; it has tiny slits, but you can probably modify it somehow.  http://www.drsfostersmith.com

I swear by these. Fry survival soars . I siphon the wigglers in . The box has a sponge filter built in for flow.

One thing I'm worried about is that I need to *tightly* cover all of my tanks because my fish are jumpers. Will I have to cut the lid to accommodate the top, and then saran wrap/tape around it?

I use the one anthraxx uses. Anything you attach to your tank you will more than likely have to "cut the lid". That's what the plastic strip in the back of the lid is for. If you take your time cutting you shouldn't have to tape anything. There maybe breeder boxes on the market that go inside the tank & attach using suction cups.

The one I have and linked to in my previous post attaches with suction cups.  An airline attaches and keeps water circulating.  It's not very big, but works for young fry. You shouldn't need to cut the tank top; you just need a small opening for the airline.

I don't put mine all the way down under the water level like they show in the picture. I have it slightly above so I can open the top and feed.

OK i'm breeding wild betta's right now...and have a thread about them.  Check out my second tank on this breeding rack.  It's a 20g long with a breeders net for my smallest fry until I can release them with the older/bigger fry just as you speak.  It's easy.

A simple $5 breeder net? Suctions to tank, small holes that no fry can get out. I used them before I had dividers to introduce bettas. Put something on top to cover the opening (I used a lid to a betta cup) and viola you got what you need. Just be careful not to rip the net.

You could also take any container you can find lying around the house, cut/drill some small holes in it, tape the top to the tank, add airline tube, and you got it.

Or get another tank just for fry and enjoy more hobby space.
