Im setting up a 46 gallon tank, never done freshwater only saltwater reefs, so im clueless. My main question is what would be the best filter? We will be doing canister, im just not sure what brands are good or not good? What would you guys reccomend i look for in a good canister filter?

I do several every year... by the time you responded I'd found the extra people needed. Next year I will post on here sooner in the season. I did not think many people here would be into sports the way I am.

I run an Eheim 2215 and an aquaclear 70 on my 75 gallon Mbuna tank and an FX5 and an aqua clear 110 on my 200 gallon Frontosa tank. I always like to have redundant filters, I stagger the cleaning so I always have live media on the tank. Canisters are great for the volume of media they hold but they are a bit messy to clean.

FX5's are awesome I have two on my 210g. But really this is only a 46g bowfront no need for a single $250 filter. There are filters in the $100 range that would handle that just fine. Cascades are great budget filters a 1200 can be had for $125 and would still over filter that tank. If budget is not a concern there are some nice Eheim classics to fit the bill nicely also.
