BGA and Erythro

I have read in these forums (fora?) that some folks use erythromycin to combat blue-green algae. Since it's a type of bacteria, using an antibiotic seems to be a way to kill it. But won't it also kill the nitrogen fixers in our biofilter? I don't want an established tank to restart its cycle with my fish in there. Thoughts?

I personally use this method all the time and haven't had any problems. I recommend removing as much as you can by hand first and watching parameters.

I've done this a few times on one tanks.. BGA isn't usually a problem but on this one tank..it was horrible.

I didn't have any issues but found if you don't get all the BGA it may come back.

in my case I increase flow by adding a power head with a pre-filter..this reduced dead spots on the far side of the tank (opposite the overflow)

I also reduced photo period and changed to new lights.

BTW, Like cory stated.. remove as much as you can before treating.

I typically just dose once, not the ongoing treatment they recommend. I just put in 1 packet per 10 gallon, then let it soak for like a week.

I've done both full dose (as mentioned for 1 week) I've also tried half dose.. the BGA responded to both methods but I'm cautious of using antibiotics too much.
