15L build, 10g shrimp grow out, 55g Walstad

Re: 15L build, 10g shrimp grow out, 55g Walstad Definitely get a lid to keep the betta from jumping! We had one jump out once and he was never the same after that. Keep us updated on your 55g. I'm sloooooowly setting mine up to be a planted tank also and I'm curious to see how you do yours. :)

Predatory Fish for a Smaller Tank

At least it won't be bigger than anything else I'm planning on getting. I'm hoping to get the tank finished by February, so I'll post pics when it's done!

Predatory Fish for a Smaller Tank

@DMD123, I'll definitely be getting everything else first and then adding the cichlids last. If I wanted to try breeding c. compressiceps, I'm guessing they'd need a lot more space to themselves. Has anyone here tried this in a community setup? @Gizmo, the scarlet badis are cute little things...

    Floramax?

Yeah I don't want a dark substrate that badly. I'll definitely be trying this out in my new tank. Thanks so much for the help!

This is why cichlids make me nervous. :(

That pike is pretty cool looking. Why didn't you keep it? Which species of rainbow would you recommend? I have read that they are slow to mature. Does that refer only to color or size also?

Predatory Fish for a Smaller Tank

My betta is a pretty responsive little fish. I'm training him to eat off my finger. I love him! But he and the corydoras habrosus get their own tank.

Predatory Fish for a Smaller Tank

OK, so theoretically, if I have a pair of either c. compressiceps or c. regani what else would could i stock my tank with? I love catfish, so what species do you guys think would be best? DMD123 thinks I should keep more cichlids, lol, so what might make good tank mates for the pikes?

    Floramax?

Do you know where I can get some in a darker color? The tan and grey is nice but I would like something a bit darker if I can find some. Should I add anything when I first plant it, like root tabs, or are liquid fertilizers enough?

Predatory Fish for a Smaller Tank

@madness I saw them on The Wet Spot's website and they were $20 for a 1.5" fish. I definitely couldn't afford more than 2 or 3. @Addicted2CAs I don't want anything too difficult. From what I've seen the dwarf pikes aren't hard to keep, but I'm still wondering if I'm getting ahead of myself. My...

    Floramax?

@Seattle_Aquarist How many inches of substrate would you recommend? I'm going to be planting a 55 gallon tank soon. And thanks again for your help!

I looked up pictures of the c. regani and they are cool looking. How big do they get? I read that c. compressiceps can be adapted to hard and alkaline water. So that opens up a lot more possibilities for a community tank.

I still haven't been there. Maybe I'll visit this weekend. What would make a good target fish for the crenicichla? I'm not sure if I want an African tank. I guess I don't know enough about them. And no convicts!
