What size discus did you want to put in there? I'd go with adults In your case. They would be alot easier to keep in that size tank. I wod probably only get 2. Being planted and your other fish. 10-12 would be way to crowded. IMO.

You can use pure ammonia. This is often found in hardware stores. Having said that, it isn't always easy to come by so you may have to look around. A fishless cycle is a lot easier and more convenient than cycling the tank with fish.
