What thanksgiving means to me...

Now that the day is here, it means I no longer have to hear people whining about pre Thanksgiving Christmas commercialization. It means I don't have to go to work for the next four days. It means I can actually relax and enjoy my family. Sadly, it also means that then next four weeks will be consumed with the worst kind of commercialism in the name of one of the most common religious faiths on our planet. When did it become about buying things instead of sharing you heart with family and friends?

This year, I will buy local, and from family owned businesses. No major chain stores with flashy ads or black Friday door buster deals. I may spend a few more dollars to get the things I want to share with my family, but every penny I spend will help a small business to stand against the chains that threaten to close their doors.

As the Administrator of a very small Nonprofit resource center helping survivors of domestic violence, budget is always an issue as we are purely donation supported. This time of year is always the hardest for the families we care for. Yet we always manage to help them to smile.

If I may ask one thing of the forum users here, it is that at some point this holiday season, you make a donation to whatever charity you care about and help to make at least one person's life better, if only for a day, or even just a moment. I prefer to give to local food banks or local small charities rather than the big name charities who pay their staff and CEOs huge salaries.
