The XL trimac is named “red” the lg trimac is named “vert” for the vertical black line it was sporting when I got it.....

Nice to see that black line cleared up. The research on it said it was something that could go away on its own. But it would not for me. I notice the tail spot is still there. That issue almost completely disappeared and then popped back up. Hope it clears up for you. Dont know what happened to the trimac but it was super stressed in my fishroom. In many ways it acted like a wild caught fish, though I doubt it was. Glad it’s shaping up for you. What are you feeding it?

Everything, haha

I have some SD growth formula, some XXL dr. Basslers garlic, kens krill pellets 9mm, and even some old flowerhorn food from way back. Just trying to bring out more throat color in it

Well how did the introduction go?

@lloyd378 picked up an F1 Rio Niltepec trimac female from me to breed with his big male Red.

This is her in breeding dress

No intros yet….. she is so much smaller that she needs some size before she begins breeding.
I would like to see her in the 5-6” range first

Been a while now.... Any updates @lloyd378? Is the female still alive? She was pretty little compared to that big guy

Does the female display breeding dress all the time? Or did she go back to looking regular?

Never in breeding dress. Just normal or slightly stressed but “red” really pays her no attention.

Always interesting as to what triggers the mating with these fish. With my Shellie that I just sold, I thought I was starting to see some possibilities, then the main male just seemed to become a dictator and tank dynamics just changed. I just wasn’t having anything happen… now John has them and they seem to be starting to breed for him, lol. Maybe a change of scenery was all it took. Tried the cold water change or change in lighting duration? When the trimac was with me, my male loved her during the day but when the lights switched to the blue moon light, he acted as if he didn’t recognize her and would hard core chase her into the corners along with the other trimac males in the tank. At least your big guy treats her well.
