Today the P. pulcher brought their babies out of their cave!

I can't believe I have babies so soon! The parents are juveniles I got from pbmax on 11/21. They paired up quickly and decided on a cave in a piece of wood that was guarded by a big piece of java fern with lots of roots. Since 11/22, they've been guarding that cave, and mom disappeared inside the cave around the middle of last week, coming out only occasionally to eat. Then this morning, when I turned the lights on ...

I love watching them guarding the fry, and watching the fry puff up in a little cloud around them, or picking for food on the bits of java fern. I'm glad to see the female out and eating again - she was very hungry this morning.

I created a video - let's see if this link works:

I don't know how long the babies will survive - I don't expect it to be long. Th parents are so anxious and vigorous about shooing all the other fish away, they keep scattering the babies as they swim through them. For a first try, though, this has been awesome.
