i would leave the carbon out all together. Google carbon and freshwater aquariums. lots of interesting reads out there.

i took it out before medicating the increased temp really made them really aggressive and coulourful they are gonna be fine...i think

Im not talking about removing it prior and during your medication add, Im talking in general, get rid of the carbon.

what media should i use i use emperor 400 HOB filters

Media is the porcelain balls that you put in your filters, or bio-balls, or scrubbies. Carbon is just something you add, there is no need for it, imo. Like I said, Google, carbon in freshwater aquariums.

No need to use carbon, it removes the good and the bad, so its bad IMO, if you are set on using something use purigen. its rechargeable and in long run less expensive.

The puigen bag would work well in the 400. Should be able to slide it between the two filter cartridges.
