Breeding tank setups - substrate

I need to pot a floating plant in there and then I'll take some pics.

Overall for a breeding tank I might find it easier to not have gravel but I do like a bit of gravel so the tank looks nice. Since this is in our family room and not a dedicated fish room I like to have the tanks looks a little aesthetically pleasing.

Remember the tank in my living room? That plant in there is totally growing under the water. It is insane. I didn't know that they could do that! My Angels, African Leaf Fish "Leafie", Bristlenose Pleco, Rosy Barb, Jul'z SAE - they're all having a great time in there. Oddly enough, the plants - in and OUT of the tank - are thriving. I suspect it's Aquarium Coops liquid green food.

Keep in mind that with some species, the type of substrate matters. For some cichlids, building the nest and pushing the sand around helps strengthens the pair bond (Pelvicachromis come to mind).
