I really like the start. Take your time. Everything will come together better that way.

Well, I guess I never gave that update, did I? After having internet issues (I Hate CenturyLink!), and of course friends and drinks, the weekend flew by! So, here's the update:

I don't have a drill press, so I had to make a guide/template for drilling the glass:

And of course I have US hole saws and metric glass drills, so I had to use a rasp to ream out the hole a little to fit the glass bit:

I can't tell you how nervous I was... area prepped:

Template in place and water added:

Turns out it was much easier than I thought!:

In case you've followed this far and don't understand why the drain is so low... hence "less aqua". This is a vivarium... I promise aquarium projects will follow!

Back to the update... I installed the drainage layer:

The product is a baked clay substrate designed for athletic field drainage:

Note my two little depressions which I hope will be little pools for breeding:

If you recall the mockup of the branches, I had to figure out how to get them to stay upright, resembling small dead shrubs for epiphytic growth. I broke apart some lava rock, and chipped it to make it sit flat and have a seating area for the branch:
IMG_20170520_174208_zpstjkdqo5v.jpg

I cut some screen mesh to size, this was to cover the drainage layer and keep the soil layer separated. I then placed the branches how I wanted them, and siliconed them to the lava rock pieces. Here's the new mockup with the "nursery log" in place:

After the silicone cured, I cut the mesh to place the rocks into the drainage layer:

Next step was to prepare the "nursery log". I plan to cover the log in mosses, but also wanted it to appear as though it has decayed enough to allow plant growth. So I drilled out some planting holes:

On to the actual planting substrate and finally the finished layout. The planting substrate is a blend created by the Atlanta Botanical Garden:

I slightly wet the substrate, and mixed it in a bucket before placing in the tank. I filled the nursery log with the substrate for planting, and mounded up to it a bit. I then formed around the two pools and filled those with a little more of the clay substrate.

Here it is:

There was a little pocket in one of the driftwood pieces (why I selected it) so I filled it for future planting:

Thanks for the comments everyone! This is actually my first vivarium. I'm trying to take my time and think about every aspect - read: sorry if this takes a while! (Wait until I start the thread for what I have in mind for my next two aquariums...;) That's my teaser.)

Anyway, I said next step was plants, but actually it will be what I got in the mail today... straight from Canada:

So, to give some perspective, here's a sampling of the types of plants I'm looking into:

1-2 small bromeliad species
3-4 fern species, terrestrial and epiphytic
Some moss and selaginella
I'm considering one or two vining plants
and finally.... some miniature orchids!

I'll be choosing plants based on growth form, leaf size, requirements and aesthetics.

More to follow

So the sun has forced me to do a lot of yard/house work... needless to say, I haven't progressed on the Vivarium. I'm hoping to get some time tomorrow.... but it's also grilling/beer time, so there's that! I just purchased another piece of support equipment as well, so updates on that will occur when I get it in the mail!

Happy Memorial Day!
